Nokomis Beach on Casey Key is One of the Best Kept Secrets on the Florida Gulf Coast
Nokomis Beach is one of only two public beaches on Casey Key, the other is the North Jetty Beach on the south end of Casey Key island.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly white sand beach on the Florida Gulf Coast that rivals that of Siesta Key, Nokomis Beach on Casey Key is it.
With the scenic beauty of the Gulf of Mexico as a backdrop and a more serene and less crowded beach area, Casey Key is a favorite spot for local families to spend the day at Nokomis Beach or participate in the weekly drum circle.
For people with disabilities there are reclining, floating wheelchairs available from the lifeguard station which can power through deep sand and water.
Casey Key, Florida
The narrow, 8-mile long island of Casey Key is a more private and exclusive area just off the sleepy mainland town of Nokomis. There are only around 400 residents, no towering hotels and little else besides a single road and two public beaches, one with a park and playground.
The small island of Casey Key might not have as much going on as Siesta Key, but for many visitors and residents that’s part of its charm. The atmosphere is extremely casual and family-friendly.
Drive south down Casey Key Road from the Blackburn Point Bridge to catch a glimpse of homes from mansions to modest beach cottages, through a canopy of old-growth palm, pine and oaks.
Several of which are owned by bona fide celebrities — like author Stephen King, who lives here part of the year.
Choices for dining and lodging are limited with a few good restaurants across the bridge and vacation rentals that vary from “old Florida” apartment efficiencies to rental condominiums and a few smaller beach-side hotels.
Historic Venice Florida is just south of the island of Casey Key and offers a historic shopping district with a nice selection of restaurants and hotels as well.
The North Jetty, just south of Nokomis Beach, offers a park and picnic area as well as a public beach with restroom facilities. It is very popular fishing spot for local residents and vacationers alike and one of the better surfing spots along this area of the Gulf.
The North Jetty Park offers free parking, lifeguards, a concession stand, bait shop, volleyball courts, a playground, picnic tables, showers and restrooms.
The park has picnic areas and plenty of free parking. But, arrive early, weekends can be a bit crowded!
