Nokomis Beach Duck Event October 2013

nokomis-beach-event-duck-race-oct-2013Rubber Duckie’s at Nokomis Beach Event

If you ever wondered what it was like to be a member of a village community then this last Saturday would have been your opportunity to experience it.

Only a village spirit could entertain the idea that a rubber duck race would be so much fun! The time was 11:00 AM on a Saturday morning; the Freedom Boat Club Duck Launcher was throttled back, sweat pouring from the brows of the nervous onlookers and duck sponsors.

The princely sum of one thousand dollars was at stake for the first duck to land on the shore of our beloved beach.

Our intrepid management team comprising of Dana Chase and Chris Stevens were quivering in their flip flops as they discussed the flat glassy seas and still mid- morning air. Liquor had not touched their lips which did not help our Quacked Crusaders.

Rubber Duckies Racing to the shore of Nokomis Beach

To whoops and cheers the ducks gathered in a pod as if frightened to move, this was the first time they had tasted freedom and it was clearly too much for the frightened little duckies to comprehend. “Let’s stick together and do nothing”! exclaimed the leader, maybe if we sit still no one will realize we are here!

At least that’s what I think was being said in rubber duckie language”.

20 minutes passed and not a duck had broken from the gaggle. Freedom made several passes with the powerful blades of the twin engines and then there was a panic in the air. Slowly the ducks separated and Chris our hero launched into the water to encourage our little yellow friends to swim toward the beach.

Event attendees waiting to see who will be the lucky winners

It was now 45 minutes into our duckie ordeal and the closing stages of this spectacular was nearing it’s finale. The onlookers were dancing to the sounds from DJ Harry’s Sound System and “The Rubber Duckie” song from the sensational Muppets creator Jim Henson.

Jim would be proud that his anthem was indeed exploding into the Gulf of Mexico heralding the winners of the first ever extraordinary event unfolding before our very eyes.

The Osprey Nokomis Chamber Crew were on the beach screaming and fainting as the hot morning sun and extraordinary excitement was simply too much to bare.

3rd Place Duck Race Winner: Brian Guentner with his family

Children standing on the water’s edge were waving encouragement with their parents singing along to the words:

When I squeeze you, you make noise

Rubber Duckie

You’re my best friend it’s true.

DO DOO DOOOO DO DO

A scream could be heard as far away as Sarasota and our first duck was plucked to safety, followed swiftly by the runner’s up.

1st Place: Retired USAF Col. Lenny & Dorothy Nolan

2nd Place: Jack Gang with the number “69” (Why did you pick that one Jack)?

3rd Place: Bryan (Remax) Guentner proving that money really does go to money!!! LOLO

Never had Nokomis Beach seen this much excitement, not since Aunt Mildred lost her engagement ring in the warm Gulf Waters, had the beach witnessed such an intense spectacle. Only now can we reflect on the fact that “Never in the field of Rubber Duck Races was so much owed by so many to so few”

Habitat for Humanity will benefit from the trepidation of the Chamber Crew and our new found yellow friends, courtesy of the Venice Rotary Club. Until next year everyone.

Expert Orange Hunter

It pays to be Quackers… Just ask the winners!!!

As if the excitement of 1000 yellow duckies racing toward the beach was not enough, the fun continued into the afternoon as 13 oranges strategically buried in the warm sands were un-earthed by Orange Hunters who had trained for many years to sniff out the citric essence that can only be found on the skin of the Fabulous Florida Orange. Each Orange holding an un-earthly value of $25.00 donated by the Osprey Nokomis vendors that have worked and saved all year with one purpose. To Sponsor the Fabulous Fruity Florida Fantasy Fun Fruit Finding Finale Favorite . To you all I salute you. All 13 Oranges were unearthed which, given all of the training our competitors had gone through was no great surprise.

Our sand castle competition, second only to the great Siesta Key extravaganza was also well received, so great were the castles, that everyone who entered won a tub of Bentley’s Ice Cream. Great Job Kids!

nokomis-beach-event-music-oct-2013

Musician, George De Jong

Let the Music Play On: Our very own local Super Star, George DeJong of Hermans Hermits fame along with the Florida Frets and very special appearance from upcoming legend Cameron with oh so many more local and very talented musicians played to the excited masses. Crowd control was a problem, however the Osprey Nokomis Security Team (Dana Chase, Chris Stevens and Tony Bartlett with a little help from Bryan Guentner kept the masses from swarming the stage) Great Job Security Unlimited! This Team of Professional, Special Forces Trained personnel will be available for children’s parties and come highly recommended. Call in to Butcher’s Gourmet, Southbay Hair Studio, Remax Platinum or Bentley’s Ice Cream for further information.

Special Guest all the way from London, Executive Chef Sir Rodney Thomas (That’s Me)!! And the very talented Su Chef, Cathy of Legendary Journey’s kept the food coming “Hot and Steamy”. A plethora of wonderful people from, Remax, Venetian Coffee, Total Therapy Solutions, Southbay Hair Studio, Silent Sports, First America Bank, Bentley’s Hotel, Freedom Boat Club, PS Printing Inc, Pepperidge Farms, Rotary Club, Walmart, Observer Media Group and our Major Sponsor “The Gondolier Sun” (Where did you go)? Ensured that the event was run like a “well oiled machine” by keeping the flow of beer, and laughter constant. Trust me we were well oiled by the end!

This wasn’t just any event, this was THE NOKOMIS BEACH EVENT of 2013.

Our thoughts go out to Mona who in the last moments of sticking numbers on our duckie friends, put her back out and was unable to attend. Mona and Red, what can we say, Once again you put duty and responsibility ahead of fun, food and frolics. You paid the ultimate price for which we salute you.

Despite you not being there in body, you were both there in spirit and I drank your beer for you my friends. Until next year!
